Beware of Oversharing

Red Vintage Phone

There’s nothing quite like having a head full of fun and creative ideas—those dreams and goals that you want to share with the entire world.

I’m completely guilty of sharing too much at times, and my children love telling everyone at family holidays that I can’t hold water. Well, that’s certainly true when something exciting happens at Hope for Women. It’s not unusual for me to get a text, email or phone call from Leah saying, “DON’T say anything, sis.”

It’s OK to share information with others, but you have to be careful about over-sharing; remember, timing is everything. The truth of the matter is some things can (and really should) be kept to yourself. It’s not necessarily that you don’t want to share or think the information should be contained, but the people receiving the information may have reactions that communicate they perhaps heard a bit too much.

I recently woke up and immediately checked my social media on my phone because I didn’t want to miss out on anything going on. (Yes, you might say I’m addicted to social media; it has a grip on me. I know I’m not alone on that one, though!) This particular day, I saw someone had posted something I had shared with her, and she was moving ahead at full speed. I had all sorts of emotions in that moment but frustration outweighed them all. I had been open with someone because I try to be giving and want the best for everyone, but this person took advantage of that.

Sharing with people is often beneficial to let us get our thoughts and feelings off of our chests and let out emotions that simply don’t need to be contained. However, there are certainly times when we need to think before we share so we don’t offer up too much information that may later come back to bite us. You know the people in your life you can trust with anything, so let them be the ones to hear all you have to say, and pick and choose what else you offer to the rest of the world.

After all, your dreams are yours, so you get to choose those with whom you share them.
